Hanukkah Bear - Beyond the Book Resources

$5.99

As I add titles to this site, I want to try and incorporate all races, all religions, all orientations, all beliefs, and as many places as I possibly can.  At two new books a month,  it may take me a  little while. Always feel free to make a specific request and I will begin working on it immediately.

I freely admit that Judaism is not the religion I practice, but I'm about to have a Jewish daughter in-law and I am determined to educate myself over these next few months.

This book was a great start to my education.  I learned about the yiddish term Bubba, and how it's pronounced. I learned the reason behind eating a food fried in oil, in this story, it was latkes.  I'm eager to try latkes and I believe that I want sour cream on mine, but I might try a little jam on one as well. A friend also told me that they are sometimes served with applesauce as well.

The biggest lesson children should take away from this book is a lesson of kindness and respect. Bubba could have become frustrated with Bear, but at each turn she was kind and respectful

Extend the Learning with Story-Based Play

Adding an element of play is another way to deepen your child’s understanding of concepts within and beyond a story. According to Hall (1991), young children often develop advanced literacy skills when they engage in play related to a familiar story. Many complex literacy skills develop naturally when the story and play intersect, setting the stage for your child to learn to read and write.

It’s easy. Take a great story, gather toys that align with that story, and get out of the way. Your child will do the rest. The goal is to allow the play to evolve naturally. You’ll be surprised by the amount of learning transferred and reinforced through this type of play.

Here’s Why We Love These Specific Products:

  • They have direct connections to the book.

  • They reinforce new vocabulary.

  • They encourage imaginative play

  • They make it easy to re-enact parts of the story.

  • They often take learning beyond the confines of the story.

  • Few require batteries, screens, or electricity.
