I'm Not Scared. YOU'RE Scared! - Beyond the Book Resources
The first time I read this book, I immediately called my daughter to tell her that she MUST read this book to her 2nd grade class. She quickly told me it's one of their favorites that they ask to hear again and again. The especially love the Storyline Online version with the author, Seth Meyers reading the story aloud. I loved it so much that I had my husband watch the online version that night as well. I just couldn't shut up about it!
I love this book because I believe Seth Meyers actually wrote it. It wasn't ghost written just so he could put out a book like other celebrities. When he's reading it, I can sense that he's tickled himself. His children must love it whenever he reads them any story, especially this one! The illustrations are also well done. So many celebrity authors wind up using illustrators that look like they were trained by Lisa Frank... this one definitely does not.
I also love the fact that some of the small details feel like there could be a backstory involved (the bell tied to the door, poor dental health practices, and the tagline, "I'm Not Scared, You're Scared".)
Most of all, I love that this story has multiple opportunities for learning.
Themes
Facing Fears
Friendship
Honesty
Teachable Moments
This book offers multiple opportunities for learning that go far beyond what's printed on the page or seen in the illustrations. Here's a small sample:

Extend the Learning with Story-Based Play
Adding an element of play is another way to deepen your child’s understanding of concepts within and beyond a story. According to Hall (1991), young children often develop advanced literacy skills when they engage in play related to a familiar story. Many complex literacy skills develop naturally when the story and play intersect, setting the stage for your child to learn to read and write.
It’s easy. Take a great story, gather toys that align with that story, and get out of the way. Your child will do the rest. The goal is to allow the play to evolve naturally. You’ll be surprised by the amount of learning transferred and reinforced through this type of play.
Here’s Why We Love These Specific Products:
They have direct connections to the book.
They reinforce new vocabulary.
They encourage imaginative play
They make it easy to re-enact parts of the story.
They often take learning beyond the confines of the story.
Few require batteries, screens, or electricity.
