Confused and Worried about What You Should Be Doing to Get Your Child Ready for School?

I’m Michelle Robinette, a retired teacher with 28 years of classroom experience and a PhD in reading, writing, & digital literature. I’m also a mom and I remember being right where you are now. I won’t lie…It’s scary.

You’re questioning all your decisions up until this point in your child’s life and wondering if you’re doing enough.

The truth? Sometimes overthinking and overdoing at this point in your child’s life can do more harm than good.

I’ve seen it so many times, and it always hurts my heart. It’s the kids who’ve been “learning” all summer, full of angst, fear, and worried that they’re going to disappoint their parents.

Here’s what I know through experience and research:

Children at this age learn best through:

  • unstructured playful approaches

  • fun activities that encourage curiosity

  • repeated readings of great stories

  • experiences, experiences, experiences

  • simple conversations and the freedom to ask questions

  • storytelling

  • meaningful connections

That’s exactly what my mail club helps you do!

I hope to see your name on the club roster soon!

Each month , an envelope arrives that’s addressed to your child.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Parent Letter that gives you the book title for the month and explains the why and how—in plain, helpful language

  • Story Tickets your child trades in for an additional reading of the story. These both empower and encourage.

  • Picture + Word Cards to help build oral vocabulary and retell the story

  • Leveled Questions & Conversation Prompts to build language, check comprehension, and get your child thinking critically

  • A Story Pennant to display and track your reading month to month

  • Story Elements tracking the “basics” present in every story (title, author, characters, setting, problem, solution…)

  • Real World Out & About ideas that take you and your child away from the story to make connections

  • Compare/Contrast Venn diagram that teaches your child to see similarities and differences between books

  • “Writing” Ideas /Prompts You’re the scribe, but your child is the one coming up with ideas based upon the story, but with a twist

  • Book Mark with questions on the back that can be asked with any book you read.

Soon, you’ll notice your child…

  • Retelling stories independently

  • Asking insightful, relevant questions

  • Using richer vocabulary

  • Making connections on their own

  • Growing confidence with books

  • Excited about learning how to read
