Why I Love This Book

I was honestly surprised when this book came out. The title was just a little to close to the classic, Goodnight Moon. However, once I was finished reading this amazingly popular book,  I realized why it shot to the top of the charts upon release.

When I'm working on these pages for you, I think my favorite part is the research and new discoveries. This book did not disappoint.

This book actually grew out of a nightly ritual the author, Sherri Duskey , was "required" to complete with her then two year old son. We've all been there, exhausted from a day's work and facing a wide awake child that doesn't seem tired at all. Duskey started thinking of ideas for ways to make this an easier task each night. She knew one thing, he... was obsessed with trucks. He only wanted to be read books about trucks and he even went so far as to mention trucks in his nightly prayers. One night, she told him that even the dump trucks and bulldozers had to rest up for the next day. From then on, they got in the habit of telling each of the trucks good night. It worked in two ways: it helped her son fall asleep and it landed her a book deal.

She had never written a story before and didn't have an agent. She wrote the book  and after completing the manuscript she sent it to Chronicle Books because she appreciated the quality of their published works on her son's shelves.  An editor found her story in the "unagented" pile of submissions, got the opinion of another editor, and not long after that, the book was acquired by Chronicle with a promise of publication!

That book has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and has multiple variations on the theme in the way of books and numerous toy tie-ins.

Teachable Moments
This book offers multiple opportunities for learning that go far beyond what's printed on the page or seen in the illustrations. Here's a small sample:
  • Parts of a Book (Cover, Title, Author, Illustrator, Spine, End Papers...)
  • Rhyming Words- Just about every page of this book has rhyming word pairs.
  • I love that there are both girl trucks and boy trucks.
  • CharacterTraits - Each truck has a slightly different personality & job.
  • Order of Events- In what order did each type of truck enter the story? Who was first? Who was last?

My favorite part of each guide has to be the comprehension questions. We read together all the time, but  I never know what questions to ask. These guides have the basic questions, but also, deeper thought provoking questions that really get my kids  thinking!     Andrea Lubitz - Charlotte, NC
